Refresh Your Building’s Interior for 2021 with New Paint Colors!

Table of Contents

There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a new year. January brings new hope and new excitement – a chance to plan for what’s coming and leave behind the old. As this year starts to wind to a close, it is time to start planning for the future.

For commercial industries, this is the perfect time to refresh the interior look and feel of your office or warehouse. Fresh paint with new colors can be just what you need to say, “out with the old, in with the new” for this coming year.

Start with Color Theory

Before you start to choose your color schemes it is important to keep color theory in mind. Think about what kind of space you want to create – something uplifting and energizing or perhaps something a little calmer and more peaceful?

Generally, warm colors like yellow, orange, and red make a space feel smaller and more intimate. Reds are usually associated with raising energy levels and stimulating conversation. Yellows are generally thought to make people feel more cheerful and energetic as long as they are not so bright as to be overstimulating.

On the other hand, cooler colors like blue, purple, and green help to create space in a room. Blues particularly, are popular because they can be relaxing and soothing. Greens evoke a feeling of nature which can also be calming.

Color Theory

Focus on what is in the space

Once you decide on the general mood of the space, you can determine the emphasis of the room. Start by looking at the things in the room that are permanent. This can vary depending on the room but can include things like windows, flooring, and shelving. You can use color to complement and highlight these existing features or to minimize them.

You can create an illusion of space or intimacy with the colors and placement you choose for them. A ceiling will feel higher if it is a lighter color and lower if it is a darker one.

Choosing Paint Colors

Once you have an idea of what you want to do with a space and what you want to emphasize, you can choose a color palette. A color palette is a group of colors that go well together and will complement each other.

When thinking through color options for a repaint, it can be helpful to look at recent trends. To see some modern color schemes that will help you narrow down the options, look at what the top professional paint brands recommend. Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore both released new 2021 color palettes that are helpful when choosing colors that go well together.

Color of the Year

When choosing a new color palette for your space, it’s important to consider shade and variety of a color. To help you visualize colors and see the currently on-trend shades, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore have both released their picks for the “Color of the Year” for 2021.

Urbane Bronze

Sherwin Williams’ choice for Color of the Year is called “Urbane Bronze.” It is inspired by nature “at its simplest and most elemental” and is designed to bring to mind natural elements like wood and stone.

Despite its dark appearance, this color is actually a grey that has brown and bronze undertones, which means it is considered a neutral color. When used on walls, it can look almost black in a certain light, but it keeps the warm undertones. That means it will pair well with a warm color palette – perfect for making a space feel more intimate.

Aegean Teal

Benjamin Moore is on the other side of the color spectrum- with a dark teal called “Aegean Teal” taking the forefront as their “Color of the Year” for 2021.

Aegean Teal is a great color for a bold look on a wall you want to accentuate. It is on the “cool” side of the spectrum, so it is good for making a space feel comforting while adding a sense of “space” to a room.

This color is perfect for a client-facing part of your building like an entry room or front office because it has a soothing, uplifting feeling that draws people in and helps them feel comfortable. You can use it for a whole wall or as an accent anywhere you need a bit of color that isn’t too bright or overwhelming.

Color Palettes

When choosing paint colors, you should think about how well colors fit together in a room. These can be colors that are in the same color family, or they can be contrasting colors. It depends on what kind of feel you want your space to have.

See some examples below:

For a calming, natural feel, Sherwin Williams has a palette called “Sanctuary” which features green and tan hues. These colors invoke nature with a sense of calm and wellness. This color palette would be good for an office or apartment complex where you want customers or residents to feel comfortable and “at home”.

Sherwin Williams Encounter

Another nature-inspired palette Sherwin Williams suggests is called “Encounter”. With a variety of muted earth tones, these colors can be combined to create a sense of connection with nature. This color palette has more contrasting colors, but they fit together because they all have similar tones. These colors are particularly fitting for rooms where people spend significant amounts of time, such as restaurants or hotel rooms because it harkens to the feeling of “roots” and makes a place feel instantly welcoming.

Benjamin Moore’s Color Palette

These colors are good choices to help make a space feel inviting and uplifting in the new year. This is a great palette to choose for a repaint of an office space or employee gathering area to help people feel invigorated and ready to work.
